References and Document Requests from Students

It is important that we follow a procedure which upholds the integrity of the school when writing reference letters for students or releasing official school documents.

Students often ask teachers, counselors and administrators to write personal reference letters for them.   Faculty members are not required to write a reference for a student if they do not feel comfortable doing so and should be honest in their responses while keeping in mind that our students are still young and a negative reference can be devastating for them.

When writing a reference or providing any document to a student, always follow the instructions described in the diagram below.  All official transcript and report requests should go through the Academic Office.

In general, it is not our practice to release official school transcripts to students or parents unless they are marked as “released to student” and rendered unofficial.  Official transcripts and references should ordinarily be sent directly to the  institution which is requesting the document.
